Technical Note Issue 01: Solar Generators in Weak Grid Environments
2024-12-04
PDFThis technical note examines challenges hybrid solar generators face in weak grid environments, focusing on issues observed in power electronics. The note highlights vulnerabilities arising under unstable grid conditions and suggests initial approaches for addressing these, including design adaptations and protective measures. It also details plans for targeted hardware testing to validate system reliability and prevent in-field failures.
The document outlines common failures in hybrid inverters, such as those related to AC auxiliary supply circuitry, input protection systems, and H-bridge power switching components. Mitigation strategies are proposed, encompassing grid disconnection, adjusting switching patterns, improving external and internal protection, proper earthing, and using high-quality components. Grid monitoring data from Abuja is presented to illustrate typical grid instability issues, such as overvoltages, voltage swelling, repeating outages and restorations, and high-frequency variations. The technical note concludes by proposing further research, including expanding monitoring locations and automating testing and analysis to better understand and address these challenges.
