Fossil Fuel Generator Insights for Nigeria
2025-12-01
PDFResearch demonstrates customer-centered solutions are crucial to facilitating Nigeria’s clean energy transition. With over 20 million fossil fuel generators in Nigeria contributing to enormous pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, noise, health risks, and high costs, modern solar-powered generators present a cleaner, quieter, and cost-effective alternative.
A new report by the Access to Energy Institute, Open Capital, and ZE-Gen highlights critical insights into replacing fossil fuel generators in Nigeria with modern solar solutions.
The report uses 12 months of smart meter data from fossil fuel generators monitored by Prospect, along with surveys from different customer categories. It reveals that while there is widespread interest in switching to solar, high upfront costs and inflexible financing remain significant barriers. It also emphasises the importance of flexible, data-driven design to accelerate solar adoption.
We encourage stakeholders in the off-grid solar sector to use our report and open source data to help:
- Engineer data-driven, customer-centric solar products
- Develop flexible financing models
- Improve policy incentives for solar generator adoption
- Leverage data transparency
