A2EI at GOGSFE24 in Nairobi

The A2EI team recently returned from the Global Off Grid Solar Forum and Expo 2024 in Nairobi, inspired by the opportunity to present our work and connect with colleagues and supporters.

We showcased our open-source data platform, Prospect (in collaboration with GET.invest), our new low-cost asynchronous electricity meter, our engineering expertise, and the GGF financing facility – proudly serving as the conference’s Knowledge Sponsor.

At the Prospect booth, we engaged with various stakeholders, including solar service companies, investors, and government officials. Notably, representatives from the Malawian Ministry of Energy were briefed on implementing Prospect for the Malawi Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund as a digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) platform.

We also participated in a stimulating panel discussion on transforming Impact Finance through dMRV, emphasizing the need for reliable, real-time data to secure financing and develop electrification strategies. Our goal is to provide the energy access sector with Prospect as a powerful tool for this purpose.

At the GGF booth, we introduced our novel financing instrument, enabling solar distributors to access inventory financing efficiently. An engaging public session covered the GGF approach, followed by a discussion featuring beneficiaries.

Finally, during our session on solar generators, we shared over a decade’s worth of experience in engineering, financing, and distributing solar solutions. Our engineering team underscored the importance of collaboration to optimize processes, enhance hardware, and scale the industry to achieve SDG7.

Following the sector-wide meetings and discussions, here are our key takeaways and next steps:

1) Data-Driven Impact Transparency
We’ve confirmed that transparent, digital, data-based impact assessment is crucial for advancing energy access. It allows us to:

  • Measure real progress
  • Identify effective electrification strategies
  • Reduce transaction costs while improving precision of reporting
  • Build trust with stakeholders
  • Guide policy decisions
  • Optimize existing subsidy programs through data-driven feedback loops

The power of data enables us to fine-tune subsidy programs for maximum impact, ensuring resources reach those who need them most.

2)  Innovative Solutions for Universal Access
Hundreds of millions still lack basic energy access. While private sector innovation is crucial, it’s clear that market forces alone won’t achieve universal access. We nee

  • Creative approaches to reach underserved populations (e.g. the Rural Energy Access Lab)
  • A stable and targeted subsidy landscape across all markets
  • Public-private partnerships to support the most vulnerable
  • Sustainable funding mechanisms to ensure long-term accessibility
The reality is stark: universal energy access cannot be achieved by the private sector alone – we must combine commercial solutions with smart subsidy programs to reach those most in need.

3) Reforming Carbon Markets
Current carbon markets and standards aren’t inclusive of the energy access sector. This needs to change to:

  • Recognize our sector’s contribution to climate change mitigation
Support adaptation efforts in vulnerable communities
  • Unlock new funding streams for energy access initiatives
  • Increase trust and transparency while reducing costs through digital verification

4) Tackling Financial Barriers
Access to affordable finance, especially for small-scale projects, remains a significant hurdle. We’re focusing on:

  • Developing innovative financing models (e.g. GGF)
  • Engaging with financial institutions to create tailored solutions
  • Advocating for policies that facilitate small-ticket investments in energy access

The path to universal energy access is complex, but with collaboration, innovation, and persistence, we can light up every corner of the world. Join us in this crucial mission!
